Newsletter December 2010:

Lucky Lucy:
Lucy is one lucky dog. She was out doing her usual patrol of her yard when a buck gored her in the right flank and neck. Fortunately, her caretakers were able to bring her right down to South Branch Veterinary Services and she underwent immediate surgery to repair a large wound in her intestinal cavity. Although her intestines had herniated out of her abdominal cavity we were able to replace them and suture her back together. Her caregiversr asked us to share this story so that other dogs would be spared this painful incident. Lucy is doing well after her surgery and is felling better. Please be careful when deer are rutting!

Survey Results:
A big thank you to everyone who filled out our appointment time survey. Most people were happy with our appointment times and availability. Some requested more Saturday and evening hours. In response, we now have appointments 3 Saturdays a month and have extended our Tuesday hours until 7PM. Also please remember that the office is open every Saturday morning from 8 - 11, even if there is no doctor here, so you can call to schedule appointments or pick up supplies. We encourage our clients to call ahead to place their order so it is ready when you arrive. This helps to minimize your wait if the office is busy and also makes sure that we have what you want in stock.

Fleas:
We are seeing an increase in pets with fleas this year due to the warm extended weather. We feel it is very important that our clients understand the flea life cycle if you are seeing fleas. Please visit out website http://www.sbveterinary.com/ for a brief discussion of the flea life cycle.

Pet Trusts:
Do you have a will for yourself? What happens to your pets if you die? Few people want to think about this, but we encourage you to prepare for the unlikely event of your sudden death. Sadly, many pets end up homeless if no preparations are made; some are euthanized. You can do it yourself or hire a lawyer to write something up. The most important first step is asking someone to be your pet's guardian. Visit http://www.professorbeyer.com/Articles/Animals.htm for more information.

New Puppy or Kitten?
If you are getting a new puppy or kitten for the holidays please plan ahead and call us to set up their first appointment. This is to be sure we have an available appointment that will fit into your schedule. Planning is especially important if you sign a contract that states an exam is needed within a certain amount of time, which can vary anywhere from 24 hrs. to 2 weeks.

Licensing:
January is approaching fast, and with it the prospect of having to renew your dog's license. Please check with your town/township to find out the date that your dog's rabies vaccination has to be good until in order to get the 2011 license. Several local free rabies clinics are scheduled every January or you can call the office at (908)735-9998 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Hunton or Dr. Sal.
